Your Bay Area Home Won't Fit on One Truck: How a Multi-Day Move Actually Works

What happens on each day of a large home move, and what to settle before you book the dates.

A two-bedroom apartment usually moves in a day. A four- or five-bedroom house with a garage, an attic and a backyard usually does not.

Many homeowners only find this out on moving day, when the truck is full and the garage has not been touched. A large move is really several moves run in sequence. Planning it that way from the start is what keeps it on schedule.

Why big homes take more than one day

It is not only volume. It is sequence.

A large home has more rooms, more fragile collections, and spaces that estimates often forget: the garage, the attic, the shed, the workshop and the patio furniture. These hold some of the heaviest and most awkward items in the property. When they are left out of the plan, the move runs long.

At Impel, a four- to five-bedroom home typically runs one to two packing days and one to two move days. The written quote states that schedule before you commit to dates.

The exact plan depends on the house, but the shape is usually:

  • Packing days: The crew packs room by room and labels every carton by floor, room and contents. Fragile collections, art and the kitchen get their own standard.
  • Loading and move days: Rooms are cleared in the order the new home needs them. On bigger moves, two crews can split loading and staging so trucks never wait, with one lead keeping labels and placement consistent.
  • Delivery and placement: Furniture and cartons are placed floor by floor at the new home, then you walk through with the lead.

Start with the walkthrough

The single most useful thing you can do is include every space in the estimate walkthrough:

  • Every bedroom, closet and storage room
  • Garage, attic, basement and shed
  • Patio sets, garden equipment and workshop benches
  • Safes, pianos, gym equipment and wine collections

Anything left out of the walkthrough is not in the plan. For heavy specialty items, send photos and dimensions early so the crew brings the right equipment. Pianos have their own guide: how to move a piano safely.

When closing dates do not line up

Large home moves often run into a gap between selling one house and moving into the next. A multi-day move can absorb that gap:

  • Part of the household goes into storage.
  • What you need during the gap stays accessible.
  • The rest is delivered to the new address on a later date.

Split deliveries like this are common, and both stops should be priced in the same written scope. Impel offers storage for exactly this situation.

Questions to settle before you book the dates

  • How many packing days and move days does the written quote include?
  • How many crews and trucks are planned, and who leads the job?
  • Where will your belongings be between days, and how are they secured?
  • What happens if the new home is not ready on the delivery date?
  • Which items are packed and loaded last, and checked first at the destination?

Planning around your household

A multi-day move also has to fit how your family lives. School schedules, work calls, pets and a room you still need to sleep in all shape the order of rooms. Tell your mover early, so the plan works around them instead of the other way round.

Impel plans large home moves across the Bay Area, including hillside lots, long driveways and properties in Los Altos, Los Gatos, Menlo Park, Palo Alto and San Rafael. If you would rather hand off every room, a full moving service adds packing and unpacking to the same multi-day plan.
