Your Complete Step-by-Step Moving Checklist
Moving is exciting! To ensure every detail is considered and planned for, follow the official Impel Moving checklist. We’ve broken down the process into simple, manageable steps for a completely hassle-free experience.
Step 1: Get Organized (6-8 Weeks Before)
The key to a smooth move is early planning. Start by coordinating with the building management at both your current and new addresses to understand all rules and restrictions.
- Confirm Moving Logistics: Talk to your landlord, building manager, or HOA to confirm moving in/out times, elevator reservations, and any specific deadlines.
- Certificate of Insurance (COI): Ask about COI requirements. We handle this for you (and it’s included in our flat-rate fee), but we’ll need the building’s requirements.
- Parking & Access: Check if parking permits are needed for the moving truck and review access points like doorways, stairs, and service elevators.
- Declutter & Inventory: Decide what you want to move, donate, or dispose of. Start this process early. Knowing what’s coming with you is essential for an accurate moving quote.
Step 2: Choose the Right Moving Company (4-6 Weeks Before)
- Check Reviews: Read recent reviews on Google and Yelp.
- Verify Credentials: Ensure the company is licensed (look for their MTR number) and fully insured.
- Get Multiple Quotes: Contact at least three companies to compare services and pricing. Beware of quotes that seem too good to be true.
Step 3: Review Your Quote & Book Your Move (4 Weeks Before)
Carefully review your moving quote. With Impel Moving, you’ll receive a transparent, all-inclusive flat-rate price. Confirm what’s included (packing, materials, COI, etc.) and review the terms and conditions before booking your move date.
Step 4: Once You’ve Booked a Mover (3-4 Weeks Before)
- Confirm All Details: Double-check the date, time, and addresses with your moving consultant.
- Order Packing Supplies: If you’re packing yourself, gather high-quality boxes, tape, markers, and packing paper.
- Inform Important Parties: Notify your landlord of your official move-out date.
Step 5: Pack Your Household (1-3 Weeks Before)
- Start with Non-Essentials: Begin packing items you don’t use daily, like books, seasonal clothing, and decor.
- Pack Room-by-Room: Stay organized by tackling one room at a time.
- Label Everything: Clearly label each box with its contents and destination room (e.g., “Kitchen – Glasses,” “Master Bedroom – Linens”).
- Create an “Essentials Box”: Set aside a box for items you’ll need immediately upon arrival: toiletries, medications, chargers, basic tools, and a change of clothes.
Step 6: A Week Before Your Move
- Final Confirmation: Reconfirm all details with your moving team.
- Change Your Address: Update your address with the post office, banks, subscription services, and your employer.
- Pack Your Suitcase: Prepare a personal bag as if you’re going on a short trip, including valuables and important documents. Keep this with you.
- Plan for Kids & Pets: Arrange for a babysitter or pet-sitter to keep them safe and out of the way on moving day.
Step 7: Moving Day – At Your Old Location
- Be Ready: Clear pathways for the movers.
- Walkthrough with Crew: Greet the moving team and do a quick walkthrough, pointing out fragile items or boxes that need special attention.
- Final Sweep: Once the truck is loaded, do one last check of every room, closet, and cabinet to ensure nothing is left behind.
Step 8: Moving Day – At Your New Location
- Direct the Movers: Show the crew where you want furniture and boxes placed.
- Check the Inventory: As items are unloaded, check them against the inventory list to ensure everything has arrived.
- Set Up Essentials: Start by setting up beds and unpacking your “Essentials Box.”
Step 9: After Your Move
- Recycle Moving Boxes: Donate, recycle, or give away your used moving boxes.
- Finalize Address Changes: Double-check that all your mail is being forwarded correctly.
- Leave a Review: If your movers did a great job, write a short review to help others find them.
- Settle In: Introduce yourself to your new neighbors and start exploring your new community. Welcome home!
