Claims and customer support

If something is damaged, a person answers.

Call (510) 571-2080 and you reach a coordinator who can open your job file, not a call center queue. Report damage as soon as you notice it, photograph the item before anything is moved again, and keep the packing it came in. The issue is documented, you may be asked for photographs and details of the move, and the owner of Impel Moving reviews the claim himself.

Report it early

Photographs taken at the time carry more weight than a description written later.

Terms in writing

Protection terms are stated in your written estimate before the move is booked.

01

What to do if you find damage

The first hour matters more than the first week. Do these in order.

  • Tell the crew before they leave, if you notice it on move day
  • Photograph the item, the damaged area, and the packing it travelled in
  • Keep the carton, padding, and wrapping until the claim is settled
  • Call (510) 571-2080 and ask for your coordinator by the move date
  • Send the photographs by email so they attach to your job file
02

Who you actually reach

The phone is answered by a coordinator, not a call center. That person can look up your move, your written estimate, and the crew who worked it, which is what makes a claim move quickly instead of being re-explained three times.

03

What happens after you report it

Contact Impel as soon as you notice loss or damage. The issue is documented and you may be asked for photographs, details of the move, a description of the affected item, and supporting paperwork. You get a written acknowledgment within 1 business day. The claim is then reviewed by the owner of Impel Moving rather than decided by the crew at the job site, and once the photographs and paperwork needed are in hand you get a written decision within 30 days. Federal rules give interstate movers 30 days just to acknowledge a claim and 120 days to decide, so Impel reaches a decision in the time the law allows for the acknowledgment alone.

Protection and valuation

Valuation is the term the moving industry uses for how a mover's responsibility for your belongings is calculated. It is not the same thing as insurance, and it is not the same thing as the Certificate of Insurance your building asks for. The valuation and protection options that apply to your move are presented before the work starts, and the one you select affects how a claim can be resolved. For California household moves, basic released-value protection is generally $0.60 per pound per article, subject to your moving agreement and the applicable regulations.

  • A Certificate of Insurance protects the building's common areas, not your belongings
  • Valuation terms are stated in your written estimate
  • Higher protection levels are agreed before the move, not after
05

Why the written estimate matters for a claim

A documented scope is what a claim is checked against. The estimate records what was being moved, from where, with what services, which means there is no argument later about whether an item was on the job at all.

  • Inventory and scope recorded before move day
  • Services and materials itemized
  • Access conditions at both addresses noted
  • Protection terms stated up front

Reporting a claim

How a damage report is handled

01

Report it

Call (510) 571-2080 or email your coordinator. A person answers the phone the same day. Give the move date and the address so your file can be opened straight away, and you get a written acknowledgment within 1 business day.

02

Document it

Send photographs of the item, the damage, and the packing. Keep the materials until the claim is closed.

03

Review

Damage claims are reviewed by the owner of Impel Moving, not decided by the crew at the job site.

04

Resolution

Depending on the damage, the valuation option on your move, and the applicable regulations, a resolution may be repair, replacement, reimbursement, or another agreed settlement. The written decision follows within 30 days of Impel receiving complete documentation.

Damage Claims & Support questions

Who answers the phone if I need to report damage?+

A coordinator, not a call center. They can open your job file, see your written estimate, and see which crew worked the move.

How quickly are damage claims handled?+

Calling (510) 571-2080 reaches a coordinator the same day, and you get a written acknowledgment within 1 business day. Once Impel has the photographs and paperwork needed to review the claim, you get a written decision within 30 days: repair, replacement, reimbursement, or a settlement offer. Federal rules give interstate movers 30 days just to acknowledge a claim and 120 days to decide, so Impel reaches a decision in the time the law allows for the acknowledgment alone.

How long do I have to report damage after a move?+

As soon as you notice it is best. For California household moves subject to the state household goods regulations, a formal written loss or damage claim generally must be submitted within nine months. Your moving agreement and the applicable regulations set the exact requirement.

What should I send when I report damage?+

Photographs of the item, the damaged area, and the packing it travelled in, plus your move date and address. Keep the carton and padding until the claim is closed.

Does the Certificate of Insurance cover my belongings?+

No. A COI covers the building's common areas such as elevators, hallways, and door frames. Your belongings are handled under separate valuation terms. The licensing and insurance page explains what each one covers.

Is valuation the same as insurance?+

No. Valuation sets how a mover's responsibility for your goods is calculated and is agreed in your written estimate. For California household moves, basic released-value protection is generally $0.60 per pound per article. Your options are presented before the move, and the one you select affects how a claim is resolved.
