How local moving rates work

For California household moves under 100 constructive miles, pricing is generally based on time. The actual rate and total cost depend on the crew and equipment required for your move.

Local moves are subject to a three-hour minimum. Beyond that, rather than focusing only on the hourly number, look at what you're receiving for that rate. A properly sized professional crew may complete a move faster than a cheaper crew that arrives understaffed or unprepared.

Know what's behind the rate

A low advertised rate doesn't necessarily mean a lower final moving cost. When comparing movers, ask what the quoted price actually covers.

Standard residential moves include furniture protection such as moving blankets, shrink wrap, floor runners, and door-jamb protection. Six things that can change the cost of a move

01 - How much you're moving

More furniture and boxes mean more carrying, more truck space, and usually more time. A lightly furnished two-bedroom apartment can be a very different move from a fully furnished two-bedroom home.

02 - Stairs and elevators

An elevator doesn't automatically make a move faster. Building access, elevator reservations, loading docks, long hallways, and the distance between the truck and your unit can all affect the scope.

03 - Parking and carry distance

In San Francisco and other dense Bay Area neighborhoods, the distance between the truck and your front door matters. Good parking can make a significant difference.

04 - Packing

If everything is boxed, labeled, and ready when the crew arrives, your move is easier to execute. If you'd rather have us handle it, full or partial professional packing services can be included in your estimate.

05 - Specialty items

Pianos, oversized furniture, artwork, large televisions, safes, antiques, and other difficult items may require additional planning or equipment. Tell us about them before your estimate.

06 - Your moving date

End-of-month dates and popular moving periods can book quickly. If your schedule is flexible, ask your coordinator about available dates.

What does a Bay Area move cost?

There isn't one useful average price for every Bay Area move.

They may all be "one-bedroom moves," but they are not the same job.

That's why we prefer to give you a number based on your move, rather than advertise a low starting price that may have little relationship to what you'll actually pay. Our moving costs guide goes deeper on what drives the total.

Moving more than 100 miles in California?

California uses a different pricing structure for longer household moves. Moves over 100 constructive miles are generally priced according to the weight of the shipment and distance traveled, along with any additional services you select.

California's "constructive miles" are determined using the applicable distance rules rather than simply the mileage displayed by a consumer navigation app. Your written estimate will identify which pricing method applies to your move.

Each move is reviewed based on the exact origin, destination, inventory, access, and requested services.

Packing rates

You don't have to choose between packing everything yourself and having movers pack your entire home.

Packing requirements and materials are documented as part of the scope so you can see how they affect your estimate.

How to keep your moving cost down

• Declutter first. Don't pay to move furniture and belongings you're going to throw away afterward.
• Finish your packing. If you're packing yourself, have boxes sealed and ready before the crew arrives.
• Reserve the elevator. Confirm the building's moving window before scheduling the crew.
• Plan parking. A shorter carry between the property and truck makes the move more efficient.
• Disassemble what makes sense. But don't dismantle complicated furniture unless you're confident you can do it safely.
• Tell us everything during the estimate. A complete inventory makes the quote more accurate.

Hourly rate vs. total moving cost

Mover B can still cost less. Crew experience, preparation, truck loading, equipment, building access, and crew size all influence how efficiently a move gets completed.

That's why we recommend comparing the estimated total scope and inclusions, not simply choosing the smallest hourly number.

No surprise rate on moving day

Your estimate is based on the inventory, addresses, access conditions, date, and services you provide.

If the scope changes - for example, you add another room, an additional stop, packing service, or previously undisclosed items - the change should be discussed and documented rather than appearing as an unexplained charge afterward.
